Golf training aids can do a great job at keeping your swing in shape and sometimes even help improve your game. How? Well, it totally depends on what the training aid is, what your sbility tis, and what part of your golf game needs help. Because your ability has such a great impact on the effectiveness of many golf trainers, we'll turn to our resident reviewers, Hack and Scratch to give their respective opinions on how these things work, and what you should expect from them. And, we should tell you upfront, between the two of them, Hack and Scratch have tried them all!

From the Hack

Oh man, if I had just half of the money back from all of the training aids I bought over the years, I'd have enough to buy the new BMW I've had my eye on. Okay, I haven't spent that much, but I have tried a bunch of different things. From the very effective to the absurd, there's a lot to choose from. One time, I spent a bunch of money on the Cyberswing video series. This was way back when there weren't DVD's around. The idea is that you watch a perfect golf swing over and over, performed both by a human being and by a computer generated figure, and the perfect swing motion will imprint into your brain. Uh, yeah, right. I also bought one about skiing. Turns out I'm a pretty good skier, but not due to watching good skiers. Come on, this is like becoming a great guitarist by watching VH1 - ain't gonna happen.

As far as I'm concerned, training aids serve one very useful purpose for the high handicapper - they keep you interested in golf, so that you're more inclined to get out there and practice. Just by keeping your mind on the latest cool gadget, you tend to read more, practice more, play more and these are the things that will help you get better, golf training aids notwithstanding.

From Scratch

So the hack is capable af making a good point! The one about keeping high-handicappers focused on the game, that is. But, from there, our opinions in this area split. It isn't the golfer that determines how good a training aid is - it's the nature of the training aid itself and whether or not it is used in conjunction with proper instruction.

Case in point: some golf swing trainers can be behemoth contraptions that are quite ridiculous. But a well placed board placed on the ground can help guide your swing in a nice inside out direction and help improve your swing. As long as there is a pro there to provide the necessary instruction to get you learning the way you should.

There are all kinds of training aids that I like very much. Best case scenario, you'll improve part of your golf game. worst case scenario, you'll be focused on the game that much more.
